Treating Heel Pain

One of the more common reasons you may be experiencing heel pain is from plantar fasciitis. This is an inflammation of the plantar fascia which is the connective tissue along the bottom of your feet. At Tola Foot & Ankle Center in Hamilton, NJ, Dr. Pamela Tola will evaluate your feet and talk to you about the symptoms you have been having. If you have recently had an injury, work long hours on your feet, or exercise heavily, plantar fasciitis can cause heel pain that makes these things impossible.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis in Hamilton, NJ

Heel pain is one of the main symptoms of plantar fasciitis. You might experience pain in the bottom of your feet or toes after a long day of walking. If you have persistent heel pain, it's important to have your feet checked out by a podiatrist. If your feet don't get the right support while you are walking or exercising, you can end up making your condition worse.

Treating Heel Pain at Home

Dr. Tola can talk to you about treatment options for heel pain that you can do in the comfort of your home. Rest, and stretching can all help to decrease heel pain. If your heel pain is caused by bone spurs or an injury that doesn't involve plantar fasciitis, further assessment may be necessary in order to provide you with the treatment you need.

The Importance of Supportive Footwear

Comfortable footwear that is supportive of your feet is important when you are dealing with heel pain. Don't walk around barefoot, as this can make heel pain and plantar fasciitis symptoms worse. The best type of footwear includes thick midsoles that properly support your arches. Consider shoes labeled orthotic to get the most support out of your footwear. If needed, your doctor can prescribe custom orthotics to better support your feet throughout the day. Taping can be used to decrease pain, but custom orthotics are recommended when you have a more chronic case of heel pain.
